GARAGE BAND 201
RECORDING STUDIO CLASS
Tim Shellberg
Article from The Times Friday, January 23

This year, Front Porch Music is offering the usual "Garage
Band" classes with an added bonus for potential players;
along with performing a live show for friends and family,
students in Front Porch's program will record their original
songs and create an EP.

Clifford, who performs and records in the region rock-pop
outfit the Crawpuppies and as a solo artist, began helming "Garage Band" programs at Front Porch in 2001.

In the original course, which Clifford said runs on average two months and is called "Garage Band 101,"
participants learn the art of writing their own songs and how to perform together, with the fruits of their labors
culminating in a live set on Front Porch's stage, which hosts an eclectic roster of national and international touring
musical acts regularly throughout the year.

The first of Front Porch's new and improved "Garage Band 201" is scheduled to start Wednesday and conclude
with a showcase there on March 15 alongside current "101" students. Along with learning song craft and
performance technique, the students in the program, which also is slated to run approximately two months, will
record their creations at the Alley Recording Co.

Located in Valparaiso at 256 Indiana Ave. and owned and operated by Clifford, the Alley boasts a bevy of
state-of-the-art equipment used by professional musicians.

"They'll learn studio etiquette and how a recording studio works," he said of "201." "They'll learn about the order
you record things in, about where you put mics on your instruments to get the best sound, about editing, about
overdubbing and mixing and about different effects you can put on your recording."

To be eligible for "Garage Band 201" programs, students must either pass an interview and audition with Clifford
or have participated in past "Garage Bands" at Front Porch Music. Clifford also said the program is ideally geared
toward participants between 12 and 20 years old but all ages are welcome.

While the first "Garage 201" program of the year has already been filled, Clifford hopes to start a new multiweek
course over the next two weeks, with subsequent programs held regularly throughout the year. (photo: Chief
